From Bob Kafka of ADAPT:

Advocates:

Governor Rick Perry, newly elected chairman of the Republican Governors Assn, was on Fox News Sunday and was interviewed by Chris Wallace.

When Gov Perry was asked about the projected $25 billion dollar Texas deficit this was his response:

1. Nobody will know what the real Texas deficit is till January when the Comptroller officially says what it is.

2. He wants to block grant Medicaid to get out from intrusive federal regulations.

3. Texas can save $9 billion dollars by block granting Medicaid. (Out of an $18 billion dollar total Texas Medicaid budget)

4. Texas will solve its budget deficit by setting priorities, cutting unnecessary spending and not raising taxes.

Obviously our response is that aging and disability programs like all Texas health and human services are and should be the highest priority set by the Gov and Texas Legislature. NO CUTS!
