Miss Deaf Texas Pageant Cancelled
Among the many issues and topics that the Texas Association board addressed on January 10 in Austin was the future of the Miss Deaf Texas Pageant. Similar to other state associations that are canceling or postponing their pageants, due to the current flat lined economy that will not improve for a few years, TAD board decided to cancel the pageant this year. The unfortunate but necessary decision is in best interest of the 45th biennial conference in San Antonio from June 11 to 13, which will also host an unprecedented statewide mini-youth conference.
Terri Levine, MDTP director, will continue to develop the first handbook for the contestants and complete it before the TAD conference. Such a handbook will be ready for the 2011 pageant. She encourages local cities, such as Houston, Corpus Christi and San Antonio, to continue their own event, but there will be not statewide competition. Ms. Levine will also work on compiling historical information about the pageant with her committee as well as raise funds for MDTP.
Additionally, Katherine Murch of Corpus Christi, our reigning Miss Deaf Texas and lst Runner-Up at the 2008 Miss Deaf America pageant in New Orleans, will make her final appearance on June 13 at the TAD Conference in the ballroom of Holiday Inn’s El Tropicano Riverwalk Hotel. Afterwards, her title will remain vacant until a new winner is chosen in 2011. The winner will represent TAD at the 2012 NAD conference.
Historically, this is not the first time the pageant has been cancelled or postponed since its founding in Fort Worth in 1977. At different times it has been inactive or resurrected, with or without the financial support of TAD in the last 32 years. A month or two before the 2007 MDTP in Irving at the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf Conference, there were only a couple of contestants, then five more joined at the 11th hour. Some 300 people attended the event and a good profit was made. But this time, like many events across the country, sponsorship is hard to find during the slow and devastating recession.
With or without the pageant, the 2009 TAD conference promises to showcase some great speakers and presenters. Watch for further information on this website and from the upcoming winter issue of The Deaf Texan.
If you have any questions or need information about local pageants, contact Ms. Levine at terri@deaftexas.org.

Dear Texas Friends,
Wow! It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here and we are speeding toward 2009! 2008 has been a wonderful and exciting year for us and we are looking forward to the 2009 Miss Deaf Texas Ambassadorship Program. Ambassadorship? Yes, the former title of the program previously called Miss Deaf Texas Pageant has been reworded: Use “Ambassadorship” in place of “Pageant”. At the Miss Deaf America Pageant in New Orleans this past July, the MDAP director announced the word replacement. There is much to do to accommodate the new changes. Otherwise, the basic preliminary criteria of the competition remain the same with some minor adjustments.
To clarify the primary reason for the change from the “pageant” to “ambassador” is that our program does not include any swimwear competition. The real goal is to stress the significance of the role for the title winner who represents the state as a role model for the Deaf. It is she who will nourish the younger minds who look up to see what the Deaf can do. So the basic reason for the name change is to inspire the young Texans to strive and achieve the best they can be.
The local ambassadorship programs will be in full gear to take place in the next few months to prepare the title winner for the Texas State Ambassadorship competition in June. The Miss Deaf Texas Ambassadorship committee and I look forward to working together with the sponsors and contestants. Indeed, we wish to successfully execute an exciting program for the local ambassador representatives prior to the selection of the new MDTA winner for 2009-2011 on June 13. Our current Miss Deaf Texas Katherine Murch of Corpus Christi will be there with us to crown the new state winner!
In the meanwhile, I have been working with my assistant director Susan Gillespie (San Antonio) to perfect the new Texas Ambassadorship Handbook. The extensive information in the handbook should give us the backbone to execute an excellent program in June. Should anyone have any interest in participating on the various committees, please feel free to contact me at the TAD website and we can discuss an available position for you. Beginning January 2009, I will have our subpage updated via the TAD website to keep you all abreast about our continuous progress.
I look forward to meeting many of you at the Texas Association for the Deaf Conference in San Antonio. This 45th biennial conference is scheduled to peak with the Miss Deaf Texas Ambassadorship Program on Saturday night, June 13th, which will close with a dance gala!
Ambassadorly Yours,
Terri Levine, Director
Miss Deaf Texas Ambassador Program
